Alfred Steiner

Date of Death: November 6, 2018

 Alfred Steiner

Alfred Steiner passed away peacefully in Trail BC on Tuesday November 06, 2018 at the age of 90.  He worked for the Highways department, operated heavy equipment and lived most of his adult life in Trout Lake BC where he was somewhat of a legend and often referred to as “The Mayor”. He moved to Nakusp in 2013 when due to poor health it became too difficult for him to maintain the home he loved in Trout Lake. He stayed in Nakusp until shortly before his death when he moved to an extended care facility in Trail.

Fred loved the outdoors and spent many hours riding his quad (usually at a high rate of speed!) all around the Trout Lake area. He was a rough and tumble kind of man who preferred to be out in the bush with his machete and could often be found out back behind his house cutting cedar shakes or busting up beaver dams. He had a great sense of humor and loved to entertain friends with a cold drink and jokes/stories that didn’t end. It was not unusual for Fred to have a houseful of company. He was always very generous and never thought twice about sharing anything he had or lending a hand to anyone who needed help. In fact if any of the Trout Lake residents needed a tool or piece of hardware it was very likely to be found in Fred’s shop.

Fred was loved and will be sadly missed by his daughter Colleen Harmston and her husband Randie; his grandchildren Aaron and Tamara Harmston; his great grandchildren; his sister Margaret Nielsen, his brother Art (Bubs), Sister in Law Pearl; his many nieces and nephews; other family members and his friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Bonnie; his brothers Rudy, Arnold, Albert and his sister Amalie.

A memorial service will be held in Nakusp in the spring. The date and time will be announced at a later date in the Nakusp paper and on the Valley Funeral Home website.

Relation: Friend

I knew Fred through my father, Roger. My sister and I would often make the journey to Trout Lake to visit Fred with our father for several days at a time. My favorite part about our trips there was Fred’s backyard, he had such a beautiful backyard that my sister and I played in for hours at a time. I also enjoyed walked the streets to the little market, which was past the while building I was told was a hotel or motel. We would walk down to the lake while Fred would take his quad, we always raced. Trout Lake is filled with so many memories and I hope I can make the journey back out there.
I attended Fred’s celebration of life along with my father and younger sister. It was very peaceful and a nice way to catch up with people I haven’t seen in years. I keep a photo of Fred in my house, as does my father, and from time to time I think back on all the wonderful memories I have of our time together.
I miss you Fred.
