Mary Penno (Evankevicz)

August 13, 1921 - June 4, 2014

Mary Penno passed away peacefully at Minto House in Nakusp on June 4,2014 at the age of 92.

She was born in Sandilands, Manitoba to a Ukrainian family. Mary was the first born of the 14 Ewankevich children; she is survived by four sisters: Olga Andrushko (Morris), Jean Kanen, Elena Schultz (Nelson) Vera Stoesz (Bill); three brother-in-laws: Arnold Penno (Carol), Clarence Penno (Violet), Allan Penno (Grace) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary worked hard alongside her late husband Eddie Penno and together they established a successful logging business from their home in Arrow Park. They were married while Eddie was serving in the army during World War II.

Besides working in the logging industry, Mary also ran a children's clothing store and bartended at the Leland Hotel. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was an active participant in their many activities.

Mary was an involved member of the Nakusp community for over 60 years and will be remembered as a feisty lady who cared about the environment, her community and most of all her extended family and many friends.
