On the morning of Tuesday, March 10th, 2015, our mother, Sumie (nee Kosaka) Matsushita, 97, passed away peacefully at the Pavilion in New Denver, B.C.
Sumie was the eldest daughter of Matsutaro (1956) and Kiyoka Kosaka (nee Miyoshi) (1949). Sumie was pre-deceased by her husband, Shoichi ‘Spud’ Matsushita (1998), brother Kensuke Kosaka (1993), and sisters, Ayano Fujimoto (1979), Yoshie Kosaka (2014) and Kay (Kikue) McBride (2013).
Sumie is survived by her daughter Elaine (Ray) Lett (Victoria, BC), son Masato ‘Mas’ (Patti) Matsushita (Revelstoke, BC), grandson, Owen (Sarah) Lett (Victoria, BC), great-grand children, Eleanor and Vanora Lett, and grandson Chris (Ella) Lett (Vancouver, BC).
Sumie has been cremated as per her request and will be buried with her husband in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver, BC. A graveside service in Vancouver and memorial service in New Denver will be held at a later date (TBA).
The family would like to express our sincerest thank you to the staff of the Pavilion and Slocan Lake Community Hospital, and our mother’s friends in the Community of New Denver, for all their care and love.
In lieu of flowers and/or koden, please consider making a donation to one of the following, the Pavilion in New Denver, New Denver Hospice Society (www.newdenverhospice.ca), Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre in New Denver (www.nikkeinewdenver.ca) or a charity of your choice in memory of Sumie Matsushita.

My parents first met the Matsushitas in 1968, when we moved to New Denver from Singapore. Sumie and Spud became good friends. My own family met Sumie in 2005 when we visited New Denver. She was as warm and as welcoming as ever!
